Engraved lids and printed tags, made in our Sandton studio

Names, dates and crests now go onto hamper lids, tags and favour boxes a few metres from the ribbon shelf, on two machines from our partner AM.CO.ZA.

Why personalisation left the outside workshop

Every year-end the request is the same. A corporate client wants each gift to feel as if it was made for the person opening it: their name on the lid, the company crest on the tag, the wedding date on the favour box. For years we sent that part of the job out to another workshop. It mostly worked, but the lead times were long, colours shifted from one batch to the next, and one wrong letter on a 200-piece order could cost us a week we did not have.

This year we brought it home to Sandton. We wanted crisp engraving on wood, acrylic and leatherette, and full-colour printing straight onto tags, card and small boxes. We compared a few suppliers and chose AM.CO.ZA for both machines, for three plain reasons: their Johannesburg service team answers the phone, the price was the best we found for the build quality, and both machines felt solid when we watched them run.

The two machines on the studio bench

  • Desktop CO2 laserThe TruCUT LC-6040L desktop laser has a 600 x 400 mm bed and sits on a workbench beside the wrapping stations. It engraves wreaths, initials and logos into wooden hamper lids, cuts scalloped clear acrylic tags and marks leatherette card holders for executive gifts. Its rotary lets us engrave around tumblers and bottles as well. The wider family is on the desktop lasers page.
  • Flatbed UV printerFor colour we use the FlatPRINT F2-6090UV/I flatbed UV printer. It prints directly onto card tags, kraft boxes, acrylic and wood, with a white layer and a gloss varnish, so a gold leaf motif can stand slightly proud of a matte tag. A full sheet of tags or a row of favour boxes goes on the table and prints as one set, every piece matching.

The small parts that protect a wedding date

A wedding order cannot wait for a courier to bring a lens. AM.CO.ZA fitted fume extraction to the laser, and we keep UV inks and spare CO2 laser parts, such as lenses and mirrors, on the shelf. Cleaning the lens is part of the morning routine now, next to checking the ribbon stock.

What changed on the packing floor

Shailen Moonsamy, our Operations Manager, sees the difference in the daily schedule.

“Personalisation used to be the slowest step in every order. Now Sbonelo proofs the names first thing, we engrave and print the same day, and the hampers are packed in time for the afternoon collection.”Shailen Moonsamy, Operations Manager

For our corporate gifting clients that means a 150-person year-end run with every recipient’s name on their own lid, without waiting on anyone outside the studio. For wedding gifting, Bianca van Wyk, our Creative Stylist, matches the favour tags to the couple’s ribbon colour exactly, because the printing happens right beside the ribbon shelf. Our Sandton wedding favour sets now include an engraved or printed name as standard.

Thato Mazibuko, who leads corporate gifting, values the repeatability most.

“A client who reorders in March gets the same crest, the same colour and the same placement as in December. That was hard to promise when the work happened somewhere else.”Thato Mazibuko, Corporate Gifting Lead

Choosing AM.CO.ZA as our machine partner

We wrap gifts for a living, we are not a machine shop, so the support counted for more than the spec sheet. Naledi Mkhize, our Managing Director, made the final call.

“We needed someone who would train the team, answer the phone when we got stuck and keep parts in stock. AM.CO.ZA did the handover in our studio, showed the team how to set up files and clean the lens, and their Johannesburg branch is close enough that we are never stuck for long.”Naledi Mkhize, Managing Director

Their Johannesburg branch is the one we deal with, and the AM.CO.ZA services guide explains their training and support for anyone weighing up a similar setup.

Personalisation questions

Which orders can carry an engraved or printed name?

Every corporate and wedding order from the Sandton studio. Hamper lids, acrylic tags, leatherette card holders, card tags and small kraft favour boxes can all carry a name, a date or a crest.

How do you avoid spelling mistakes on a long guest list?

We work from your spreadsheet, not retyped names. Sbonelo proofs the full list in the morning and sends you a sample proof before the run starts, so a typo gets caught on one tag instead of two hundred.

Can a repeat order match last year's crest exactly?

Yes. The artwork, colour settings and position stay on file in the studio, so an order placed in March can match the December run.
